Summer Home Maintenance Checklist. Keep Your Home Safe, Cool, and Efficient

Summer is the perfect time to stay ahead on home maintenance. Warm weather allows for easier inspections, repairs, and upgrades—both inside and out. This seasonal checklist will help you protect your investment and avoid future problems.

Exterior Maintenance

  • Inspect driveways, patios, and walkways for cracks. Repair any damage to prevent further deterioration.

  • Check decks and porches for loose boards, nails, or signs of rot.

  • Look for peeling paint or damaged caulking on siding and trim. Touch up as needed.

  • Inspect the foundation for visible cracks or drainage issues.

Yard and Landscaping

  • Clean and prep your grill for regular use.

  • Test your sprinkler system to ensure proper operation and avoid water waste.

  • Trim back trees and shrubs, especially anything in contact with the house or roof.

  • Clear out weeds and inspect flower beds for signs of pests.

Basement and Crawlspace

  • Check for any standing water or signs of moisture.

  • Test your sump pump and make sure the check valve is functioning.

  • Inspect the basement floor drain and clear any blockages.

  • Look for pest activity or damage from insects or rodents.

Garage and Storage

  • Ensure the garage door’s safety shutoff system is working properly.

  • Check for water intrusion or signs of leaks around the walls or floor.

  • Look for pests, especially around stored boxes or bins.

Interior and Electrical

  • Test your home security system to ensure it’s operating correctly.

  • Reverse ceiling fan direction to counterclockwise to improve air circulation.

  • Check all electrical cords for damage or fraying, especially fans and outdoor tools.

  • Deep clean kitchen appliances, including the dishwasher.

Summer is the ideal time to catch up on small exterior issues before they worsen in the wet and cold months. Catching cracks, rot, or drainage problems now can save you major repair costs later.
